12-Do teenagers in the UK love e-cigarettes more?

2022,12,09
Many teenagers in the UK, even those who have never smoked, are trying e-cigarettes, a survey has concluded.

A questionnaire survey of 16,193 14-17 year olds in the North West of England revealed that one in five had tried or bought an e-cigarette.

Experts say it is vital to find out why so many people are addicted to e-cigarettes.

A benevolent view

The Geek bar e-cigarette functions as an alternative to cigarettes. It looks like a cigarette, tastes like a cigarette, and smokes, tastes and feels like a cigarette.

It has the same look and taste as a cigarette.

It works by atomising a small amount of nicotine and a few other chemicals for the user to inhale.

Researchers say that around 1.3 million smokers and ex-smokers in the UK have switched to e-cigarettes.

The growing popularity of e-cigarettes has caused much controversy in the UK.

Supporters say it provides an important means for people who want to quit smoking, successfully reducing the rate of smoking and acting as an effective tobacco control tool.

Anti-smoking advocates say that the growing popularity of e-cigarettes will undermine years of anti-smoking efforts by 'normalising' smoking.

They are particularly concerned about the adverse effects of e-cigarettes on children and non-smokers.

The survey, conducted by Liverpool's John Moores University, revealed that 19% of respondents had tried e-cigarettes.

Of these, 5% of young people surveyed said they had never smoked a cigarette.

Managing restrictions

Professor Bayliss, who was in charge of the survey, told the BBC that the high rate of e-cigarette use among teenagers had surprised him.

The sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s has been banned in England. The government is also considering introducing a similar ban to other parts of the UK.

From 2016, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) will require a licence to sell medicines in the UK.

Although some countries have already somewhat rejected e-cigarettes, there are currently few restrictions on e-cigarettes in the UK.
